Journalist Beren Cross has claimed that Leeds United interim manager Michael Skubala has hinted at key meetings happening with Alfred Schreuder.
What’s the latest on Skubala and Leeds?
On Sunday afternoon, with Jesse Marsch no longer at the helm, the Whites took on Manchester United in the Premier League for the second time in the same week.
While they picked up a point away at Old Trafford, Leeds crumbled late on at Elland Road, conceding twice in the last ten minutes to lose 2-0.
Speaking to the press after the game, Skubala played down talk that he could be given the job on a permanent basis and suggested that there will be key conversations about the position at the start of the week.
In full, he said: I’m not expecting anything at the moment. I think it’s quite clear. I’ve been quite clear about trying to do the best job I can in the short space of time and set the team up and probably sit down tomorrow with the board and Victor [Orta] and Angus [Kinnear] and co and have a chat but we’ll go from tomorrow I think.”
Reacting to this on a LeedsLive Facebook stream, Beren Cross spoke about how Skubala may well have been alluding to Schreuder who was also at Elland Road this weekend.
The journalist said: “We’ll have to see if he [Schreuder] gets the job. I think Skubala was certainly alluding to the fact that there’ll be meetings tomorrow involving him and the board, and they’ll see which direction they’re going moving forward.
What would Skubala appointment mean for Leeds?
After the loss to Man United on Sunday, the Whites are now stuck just one place and one point above the bottom three with relegation rivals Everton right behind them with a game in hand that will be played tonight against Liverpool.
With that in mind, whoever comes in will have a big job in terms of simply keeping the club from being dragged down in the Championship.
After Skubala’s comments, it certainly doesn’t sound as if he’ll be given the position on a permanent basis and so perhaps Schreuder will be spoken to this week and the former Ajax man will be hired.
BBC Sport have reported that “initial talks” have taken place and if more conversations are to happen this week at Leeds, as Cross suggests, it will be interesting to see if they result in a final decision.
